Aulani Kauhane
(January 12, 1966 – December 18, 2008)

Aulani Kauhane first came to Waikiki Surf Club as a paddler in 1987 with some of her college teammates.  A few years later she assisted the club’s Secretary with membership responsibilities, not knowing that in 1994, at the request of our Club’s President Moku Froiseth and Lifetime Directors John Lind, George Downing, Wally Froiseth, and Henry Lum, she would be asked to serve as a Board Director and become the Club’s Secretary. Aulani accepted the task and was honored for the opportunity.
With the reorganization of the club at hand, she rolled up her sleeves and got right on it.

Aulani played an integral role on almost every Waikiki Surf Club committee, from the executive, membership, finance and by-laws committees to the web site, merchandise, travel and social committees.  She took much pride in the work that needed to be done.  The connections she made with members were notable and her ease of dealing with our junior members was innate, but it was her openness to assist adults that was much more accomplished. Aulani’s repoire with kids and adults helped to make their paddling time enjoyable.

Aulani also found great pleasure in assisting the families of our club with their financial needs. She wanted everyone to feel comfortable and always made them a part of our canoe paddling ‘ohana.  Aulani did whatever it took to ensure the club ran smoothly.  Her administrative involvement also included work with the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) where she served as Corresponding & Recording Secretary, contributed to the Scholarship and Molokai Hoe Committees, and even found time to assist as a race official.

Aulani’s proficiency, creativity, loyalty and sincerity enhanced the structure and foundation of Waikiki Surf Club and we are proud to be a product of all of her hard work.   She would be truly humbled as one of the honorees of Waikiki Surf Club’s Scholarship Fund.
