The Shirley Ann Kalaniopua Nakamura Memorial Fund was established in 1997 after the passing of a very dear and long time member, Shirley Nakamura affectionately known to all as Aunty Shirley. The primary purpose of the scholarship is to assist junior members with all or part of their financial obligation for membership dues. Aunty Shirley always took care of the children here at Waikiki Surf Club and this scholarship is a way of perpetuating her care and concern for them. Aunty Shirley's was an awesome paddler as evident from her many medals that she earned as a member of our WSC's prestigious Senior Women's crew. Her legacy continues today through her children who continue to paddle for Waikiki Surf Club as members of our winning 16 and 18 girl's crews.
We are confident that Aunty Shirley is very proud of all our keiki crews and we know that her spirit continues to guide and lead all of us here at Waikiki Surf Club.
Each year we are able to fund 4 full scholarships and 4 partial scholarships. A full scholarship covers the entire cost of dues for a Junior member ($103.00) and a partial scholarship covers half of the dues for a Junior member ($51.00).
This year we were fortunate to receive the OHCRA Club Scholarship 2002. This scholarship allowed us to help every child that applied for a Shirley Nakamura scholarship. Through the generosity and giving spirit of family and friends we are able to continue this scholarship year after year.
